Building a future with joined up jobs and skills
April 2008
Building Futures East a new development trust in Newcastle, is being tested out as a model of good practice for tackling worklessness. The development trust has been set up to ensure local people have suitable skills to benefit from job opportunities resulting from the regenration of Newcastle's East End following extensive community consultation. They have connected up lengthy dialogue with local people with an exceptional level of buy-in from employers and schools to provide vocational training and skills that maximise opportunities. the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) sees this as the way forward in efforts to address worklessness in other parts of the UK. Sunlight to deliver catering services to council HQ - 31 March 2008
Medway Council announced last week that Sunlight Social Enterprises have been selected to deliver all catering services at the Council's new corporate headquarters at Gun Wharf. This will be the fifth cafe in Sunlight's growing portfolio of social enterprises which support local projects and fund community development throughout Medway. For full press release

Prime Minister honours Hull Community Wardens
Hull Community Wardens have been commended by Gordon Brown for their contributions in assisting during the devastating floods last year. They have been awarded a certificate for 'Outstanding Contribution to the Community' by the Prime Minister. Read more.

The Middleton Plus Development Trust revived a new farmers market after an interval of more than six decades. The markets have been such a success that they will continue next year. The final one of the current season is to be held on Sunday September 30 in the main streets of Middleton-in-Teesdale near Barnard Castle, County Durham. They have attracted hundreds of extra visitors to Upper Teesdale since the Middleton Plus Development Trust started organising them on the last Sunday of each month through the summer and autumn. Manningham Mills Community Centre opens in
landmark Bradford location
Manningham Mills Community Association (MMCA) has opened a new community centre in the famous Lister's Mill, Bradford's premier heritage landmark. The project is the result of a partnership between Urban Splash, Bradford Council, and MMCA, with funding from the European Regional Development Fund and Neighbourhood Renewal, as well as various other charities. Affordable housing — series of events held in Bamburgh, Beadnell and Seahouses
A series of events was held in Bamburgh, Beadnell and Seahouses to bring together communities worried about affordable housing. As Gordon Brown’s new government grapples with the challenges of delivering low cost homes on the back of the housing boom residents from the area have decided not to wait for solutions from afar. Double award for Paddington Development Trust
Paddington Development Trust (PDT) has earned a double congratulations this month as earlier this month the trust won the national award for Leadership in Sustainable Communities from the Academy for Sustainable Communities. Shortly after the POWER programme, delivered through a partnership between PDT, Open University and City of Westminster College won the Cross-Organisational Partnership and Impact Award at the Institute of Education’s London Education Partnership Awards. Gordon Brown visits Sunlight Development Trust
As Gordon Brown prepares to begin his new role as Prime Minister, the Sunlight Development Trust in Kent is proud to have been one of his first points of call during his May campaign for leadership of the Labour Party. Triple award secured for Community Ventures Ltd
Complete Secturity (Europe) Ltd a trading subsidiary of development trust Community Ventures (Middlesborough) Ltd has achieved a triple approval from the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The Awards was presented to the company by Ashok Kumar MP for Middlesborough South & East Cleveland. Find out more.

Keystone Shop Shutter Arts Project Celebrates Lottery Win
Keystone Development Trust has secured Lottery funding for a second 'Shop Shutter Art' project to run on Thetford's Saxon Ward. The project, set to begin in May, has been awarded a Young Roots Grant of £24K by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Find out more.

Commonside awarded £73K to run Employability for Parents project
Due to successful management of the Merton part of the South London Aiming High Project for Young Mums, Commonside Community Development Trust was invited to bid to the London Borough of Merton’s Early Years and Extended Services to run an Employability for Parents Project, as a result they were awarded £73K for 2007/08. They are particularly pleased with the result as it enables them to build on existing work with young parents and those who have become disengaged from the education system. Action for Business (Bradford) Limited celebrates 10th Anniversay
ABL celebrated the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Carlisle Business Centre on 29 March 2007. The celebrations coincided with the retirement of ABL's Chief Executive, Gurdev S Dahele. The DTA is delighted to appoint Gurdev to the post of DTA Special Advisor, a lifetime award in recognition of outstanding achievement and contribution the movement. Gurdev joins Roger Matland, formerly of Westway Development Trust, Andrew Robinson, formerly of Natwest/RBS and now with CCLA Investment Management Ltd, and George Nicholson, of Coin Street Community Builders and Trustees of the Borough Market as a Special Advisor to the DTA. Acorn House named best restaurant in Observer Food Monthly Awards 2007
The Shoreditch Trust in partnership with the Terence Higgins Trust launched and run social enterprise restaurant, Acorn House, which has recently been voted Best Newcomer in the fourth annual Observer Food Monthly Awards. Read the full story.

Hailsham Trust sees cash boost from local store for community juice bar
The local Waitrose supermarket in Hailsham has given a contribution to an exciting new Community Juice Bar project to be set up in North Street, Hailsham and due to open later in 2007. Full story.

Commonside Development Trust’s Naomi Martin nominated as champion for local women
Naomi Martin of Commonside Development Trust was invited as a guest to the Houses of Parliament on 8th March as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations. Siobhain McDonagh, Local MP for Mitchum and Morden, in London, invited Naomi Martin to the day's celebrations in acknowledgement of her work with young mums as part of the Aiming High project for the Merton area. Cabinet Ministers visit DTA members, the Broxtowe Partnership Trust and NECTA, in Nottingham
Cabinet Office Ministers responsible for driving the Government's social exclusion policies visited DTA members in Nottingham on 5 March. Hilary Armstrong MP, visited the Broxtowe Partnership and Ed Miliband MP visited DTA associate member NECTA. The aim of the visits were to see what Nottingham's public, charity and voluntary sectors are achieving on 'early intervention' for those most at risk of being socially excluded. Full story.

Secretary of State visits Account 3 Women’s Development Trust
Account 3 were asked by the Department for Work and Pensions to facilitate a meeting between the Secretary of State, John Hutton and VCO’s/women’s groups on 28 February. The meeting in Bethnal Green Library, London, focused on issues that concern economically inactive women. Both Toni Meredew of Account 3 and Farida Yasmin of The Limehouse project gave talks on their work and the barriers that women face in getting into work. John Hutton also took a tour of Account 3 and spent almost an hour talking to the ladies. Full story.
