The Federation of Northumberland Development Trusts
(FONDT)
Over the last 10 years Northumberland has seen an enormous growth in the creation of Development Trusts, there are now in 17 in the county. As organisations spearheading community regeneration they have individually delivered a vast range of projects attracting inward investment of many millions of pounds.
The Federation of Northumberland Development Trusts (FONDT) was established in October 2002 following a conference jointly supported by the Development Trusts Association (DTANE) and the Community Council of Northumberland (now Community Action Northumberland). The conference identified the need for Trusts to come together to form an organization primarily for networking and representation. FONDT is now represented on a range of county–wide bodies including having a seat on the Board of the Northumberland Strategic Partnership.
In December 2004, following a study by Pulse Regeneration into the opportunities for development trusts in Northumberland, FONDT agreed a constitution and associated membership and communication policies. Its principle aim is to “work together as Development Trusts with our partners to create vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities in Northumberland.” FONDT also aims to:-
- support and encourage the establishment of a development trust in every community throughout Northumberland.
- through the Development Trust Association network provide a united voice for community based regeneration in Northumberland, regionally, nationally and internationally.
- facilitate trust to trust working, support networking and encourage larger trusts to support smaller and emerging trusts.
- provide a lobbying and advocacy role for member trusts.
- provide development support and services to member trusts.
- champion the work of development trusts and promote their activities.
FONDT seeks to help its member organisations evolve into sustainable and economically viable trusts which are better placed to serve the communities in which they operate. In a “challenging funding climate”, FONDT believes the role it plays in providing specialised and effective support for Development Trusts has never been more needed.
