The DTA is a network of community practitioners, dedicated to sharing skills and knowledge. In the South West the DTA
• helps people set up new development trusts
• helps development trusts work effectively
• seeks to influence others to support our movement
How does it feel to be part of a movement…
• of 444 full and emerging Development Trusts UK wide
• that serves communities that make up a quarter of the UK population
• that has a combined income of £263m, of which £106m is earned income
• that holds £489m of assets in community ownership
• that employs 4,500 staff and 17,000 volunteers work
• that supports almost 10,000 community groups and 9,000 small businesses
• and engages in a wide range of community focused activities and services?
As a member of the DTA you are part of that movement: transforming your community for good.
Across the South West there are 48 full and emerging category members and there is growing interest in our movement and messages. The South West DTA Network is overseen by the Regional Network Committee. Committee members are volunteers from among the membership and our partners who are keen to build the network and advance your interests in the Region and beyond.
Our current priorities are to:
1. growing and developing the DT movement in the SW.
2. improving networking among our membership and with other community and social enterprises.
3. advancing the DTA’s agenda and members’ concerns – in particular asset transfer and the SW Assets Manifesto.
4. Strengthening our rural members.
5. Establishing a regional asset to support community enterprise.
Help us to strengthen and grow the network…. as well as contacting the regional DTA staff team you can get in touch with any member of the Regional Network Committee to share your ideas, concerns and views.
Use our networking checklist to think about how you can make the most of the network. Tell us how we can help you do this.
Get connected – use the DTA’s skills and knowledge exchange fund to visit other projects and see how they do things.
We will be running networking events around the region over the coming year... we look forward to meeting you.
Discuss DTA issues with your Board - let us know your experiences and what you think.

Networking checklist
Time starved, too much to do, under resourced, isolated… recognise the picture? So you may think that now is not the time to start networking. Think again!
Looking back you will know that one of the keys to your achievements and overcoming difficulties has been cultivating contacts, getting the right information and help. Over time you will have also shared your skills, expertise and knowledge with others.
What does your organisation value?
• mutual support from organisations with common values and ideas
• opportunities to collaborate and learn
• accessing information, ideas, expertise, support and money
• developing one to one professional relationships offering support for staff and volunteers
• contacts to make and exploit
• promoting your organisation or yourself!
• having ‘a voice’ and influencing others on policy and practice
• comparing your organisation and its performance against others
• being inspired and inspiring others
• getting practical advice, tools and resources
So during these tight times become ‘network rich’ – you don’t know when it might pay off!
